Missing Chrome or Firefox Bookmarks after Windows 10 Reset or Upgrade

Last Updated: 5/26/18

Problem:

Missing Google Chrome bookmarks after Windows 10 reset or manual upgrade.

Story:

I recently dealt with a failed Windows 10 upgrade to v1803. I performed a manual upgrade twice. The first time I told the upgarde to preserve everything, fail. The second time I said it to preserve my files and data, but not my apps. This succeeded and as expected I only had windows installed and nothing else. I upgraded all drivers from device manager and reinstalled basic apps like Firefox and Google Chrome. I expected all my Google Chrome data to still be in my app data folder, so I was surprised when reinstalling Google Chrome did not show any of my bookmarks. :-(

I was aware that windows 10 often saved previous windows versions in the c:\windows.old folder, but I had no idea that there was all user data. If you look in c:\windows.old you will find c:\windows.old\users. look there if there is missing user data you cannot find in your normal profile folder.

Solution:

copy c:\windows.old\users\(username)\appdata\local\google\chrome\user data\default
to
c:\users\(username)\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
