DVD Firmware Upgrades

Last Updated: 1/25/10

To understand DVD firmware you must first understand what firmware is. My definition of firmware is: software the physically resides on the hardware and controls how the hardware functions when given comamnds from software. In other words, firmware is part of your hardware and your hardware can't function without it. With that said ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN DOING A FIRMWARE UPDATE OR YOUR HARDWARE WILL NOT FUNCTION!

I'm writing this article, because i just updated my NEC ND-1300A DVD+/-RW Drive against NEC recommendations and it went really well anyways. My NEC DVD drive came in my eMachines Model T2865. The drive is an OEM drive from eMachines and it was at firmware level 1.05 and is now at firmware level 1.0b. The firmware was downloaded from: http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/

The drive now burns at speed 4x instead of 2.4x and it will burn to many more brands of media. I was getting an "Illegal Disk" error from nero 6 prior to doing the firmware update, because I was using Imation and Staples Brand DVD's instead of the previous TDK DVD's that worked fine.
