VMware ESXi 5.0 Virtual Machine Loses a Network Adapter

Last Updated: 9/10/12

Problem: Running ESXi 5.0 Build 504890. Remotely connecting to a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 via Dameware (similar to RDP), caused the secondary network adapter of the VM to disappear instantly. This adapter was being used for iSCSI, so all local disks vanished.

Cause:
As far as I can tell from the hostd.log on the affected host, there was an insufficient video memory issue at the exact time of the remote connection. The log does not mention the network adapter being removed. However, I believe the events are related.

Solution:
1. Add the network adapter back to the VM and 2. hope that VMware has fixed this bug already in a newer version build.
