If you have Earthlink for an internet provider and you can dial-up to the internet ok but can't browse the web then you probably have a problem with Earthlink's Accelerator technology. Download HiJackTHis to verify. Run hijackthis and then push scan. If you see an entry near the top that says somethink like "Proxy: localhost:8081" or "Proxy: localhost:8080" then accelerator probably is the cause. Make sure accelerator is installed, even if you don't want it I have seen web browsing not work without it, and that it is set to accelerate all connections. If it is not installed or is missing ( you should see a black "5X" in the system tray if it is working) write down your email address and password and then uninstall and reinstall earthlink's software. Be sure to select accelerator during the install.
