[VMware vCenter - Alarm Migration error] Cannot migrate [vm name] from [esxhost1] to [esxhost2] in [vCenter Org]

Last Updated: 7/27/11

Problem: Using VMware vSphere ESX/ESXi 4.x vMotion migration fails with error, "[VMware vCenter - Alarm Migration error] Cannot migrate [vm name] from [esxhost1] to [esxhost2] in [vCenter Org]"

Solution: disable and re-enable hot migration support setting

Open vSphere and go to the Configuration tab of the ESX host.
Click on the "Advanced Settings" under the software area, not the hardware area.
Locate and click, the "Migrate" node from the list of the left side.
Change the top setting "Migrate.Enabled" to 0 and hit ok.
Then go back to the same setting and set it to 1 and hit ok.

Also check for obvious vMotion problems. SSH to one of your ESX hosts and ping all the vMotion ip addresses on your network. Make sure they all respond.
